Back in 1929, his grandmother's brother Doora Gleeson rode to victory in the event on Pick Me.
However, the title was taken from him after a protest.
"They reckon he ran around the second last fence," the 77-year-old said.
"Whether he did or not I don't know."
Mr Conheady said he was later told by one of the jockey's sons that his father was less than pleased.
"They took the jinker home that night and going over the Dennington bridge they were too scared to open their mouths," he said.
The owner of the horse was also angered by the decision.
"The owner went out to my grandfather's house that night," Mr Conheady said.
"They had a big redwood table and he pounded it until 2 o'clock in the morning because he reckoned he was robbed.
"There was no video then.
"They went around and had a look and there were foot marks around the fence but there were about 100 foot marks around the fence."
Mr Conheady has attended the May Racing Carnival every single year since the age of three.
He said winning the Grand Annual was a career highlight.
"We won races at other meets but that's the one we always wanted," Mr Conheady said.
He said it was a shame crowds were not allowed at last year's carnival.
Mr Conheady usually attends the carnival with his brother Frank.
But sadly he passed away a month ago.
Mr Conheady said he planned to keep coming to the carnival every year.
"I'll keep coming until they won't let me in the gate," he said.
