The Bucks lost their superstar, two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, to a right ankle sprain in the first minute and then went on to lose 143-136 to the team with the worst season record in the NBA.
The Rockets' unlikely upset owed much to a 50-point, 11-assist performance from 20-year-old guard Kevin Porter Jr, who connected with nine 3-point shots.
Porter joined some elite company, one of only four players to produce a 50-point game before turning 21, along with LeBron James (twice), Devin Booker and Brandon Jennings.
Antetokounmpo already had a right ankle worry sustained in the Bucks' previous game against the Charlotte Hornets.
"I think we're hopeful that it's not serious," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said.
"We'll see how he responds to treatment tonight, treatment tomorrow, get an update at some point tomorrow."
In Indianapolis, Kevin Durant matched his season-high of 42 points and Alize Johnson recorded 20 points and a career-high 21 rebounds as the Brooklyn Nets beat the Indiana Pacers 130-113.
All five Nets starters scored in double-figures, with Jeff Green, Joe Harris and Landry Shamet all hitting for 14 points and Tyler Johnson adding 11. Kyrie Irving sat out due to a groin ailment.
In Detroit, Tim Hardaway Jr. poured in a career-high 42 points as Dallas Mavericks edged away from host Detroit Pistons to win 115-105.
Dallas star guard Luka Doncic sat out with a left elbow contusion, while the Pistons held out several regulars, including starters Jerami Grant and Mason Plumlee.
In Denver, Michael Porter Jr. scored 23 points, Nikola Jokic had 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets beat Toronto Raptors 121-111.
The Nuggets, who had seven players score in double figures, earned their fourth win in a row.
In Minneapolis, Karl-Anthony Towns scored 22 points and came through during a crucial fourth-quarter stretch, propelling Minnesota to a 126-114 win over visiting Golden State Warriors.
Stephen Curry finished with a game-high 37 points and a team-high eight assists for the Warriors.
In Oklahoma, Zion Williamson scored 27 points to lead New Orleans Pelicans to a 109-95 road victory over Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Pelicans, who won for the third time in five games, moved within three games of the No. 10 spot in the Western Conference.
