As of October next year Honda and Suzuki will stop selling quad bikes in Australia, following in the footsteps of Polaris and Yamaha.
The decision comes as new federal government standards will require all quad bikes be fitted with rollover protection from October 2021.
Philip Russell, from Philip Russell Motorcycles in Warrnambool, said a shipment of ATVs (all terrain vehicles) had been ordered in August and had completely sold out.
He said as of October his business would no longer sell ATVs which will account for about 20 per cent of his business.
"That's 20 per cent of our business that is walking out the door," he said.
"A lot of farms are only operational with an ATV."
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) would this year focus on the implementation of safety standards related to quad bikes including preparing consumers and businesses for a mandatory requirement for operator protection devices as it is introduced in October.
"There were a record 23 quad bike deaths last year, many from rollovers, and since 2011 there have been 162 deaths and an estimated six injuries per day associated with quad bikes," ACCC chair Rod Sims said.
"This is appalling and unacceptable. The ACCC will be focused on ensuring compliance with a series of requirements which are already in effect and importantly, also delivering educational initiatives about the second phase requirements that come into effect in October 2021."
