Emma House principal solicitor Jacqui Joseph has assisted 205 at-risk women since July 1 last year.

In six months alone, that is 76 less than the number of victim-survivors she helped for all of the 2019-20 financial year.

"We've certainly been busy," Ms Joseph said.

"We're seeing more women more regularly and the matters are becoming more complex and they're presenting with multiple issues."

Ms Joseph said victim-survivors often needed an additional level of non-legal assistance, such as financial counselling, emotional support and help with issues surrounding family law.

"There has also recently been an increase in clients presenting with complex mental health issues and disabilities," she said.

But once the sole force behind Emma House's free duty lawyer service, Ms Joseph is now joined by two new solicitors, made possible by funding received as part of a $17.5 million state government package.

Staff at the Kepler Street office last year gratefully accepted $171,500.

"With the extra funding we've employed local solicitors at Portland and Hamilton," Ms Joseph said.

"That provides a continuity of service. It's the same lawyer at the same court each week so if your matter is adjourned for two or more weeks, you're not having to relive your story again to someone new."

Ms Joseph said the funding also increased the weekly hours of Emma House's legal assistant.

"It means the solicitors can get onto the business of lawyering rather than being bogged down by paper work," she said.

"It gives us more time with the clients which is what is most important. It's very helpful."

Ms Joseph said despite the growing demand, no one would ever be turned away.

"If someone comes to us, they would never be told to go elsewhere," she said.

"Even when we're as busy as we are now, we will always be there to help.

"And if someone doesn't fit our guidelines we make sure we refer them to someone else who can assist."
