The league, which caters for women and under 18 girls, has pencilled round one in for Sunday.

WVFFL administrator Mike Farrow said clubs would meet with AFL Western District officials in Hamilton to determine the best way forward.

Terang Mortlake, which was planning for its inaugural year, has withdrawn from the women's competition, citing a lack of numbers.

There are also concerns for a number of under 18 teams which will also remain on the sidelines this season.

"They're not that far off, the ones that are struggling (for enough players) just don't want to put clubs out and be there one week and not the next week," Farrow said.

"So that's what we're going to talk about and just encourage these girls to go and play somewhere else and not miss out for a year."

Terang Mortlake co-ordinator Noel McConnell said the Bloods would still field an under 18 team this year.

He is confident the club's plans for an women's team would only be put on hold for 12 months.

"We had good enquiries but getting 15 girls in one place at one time proved difficult," McConnell said.

"We were that close to getting them over the line, had we have got enough girls together at the right time, there would've been enough enthusiasm that enough fringe ones would've come onboard.

"We probably didn't give ourselves quite enough time and we'll give ourselves another go this year and we'll do things before Christmas when there's less other sports involvement, particularly netball, and see if we can get it over the line then."

McConnell said the Bloods would have more under 18 girls graduate to women's ranks at the end of the season which would help its cause too.

The club is pleased with interest from across the region, with players from Terang, Garvoc and Lismore in the frame.

The WVFFL includes teams from Horsham, Portland and Ararat.
