The Warrnambool-raised golfer finished tied-for-fifth at The Masters as Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese man to win a major.

Leishman entered the final round tied-for-second but two bogeys from the first three holes and further blips on holes seven and 11 meant he fell further behind Matsuyama and the chasing pack to eighth on the leaderboard.

But the 37-year-old showed resilience on the back nine at Augusta National, shooting birdies on 13 and 16 to push back into the top five.

He finished six-under, ending the event as the best-placed Australian.

The result was Leishman's second-best result at the tournament following a tied-for-fourth finish in 2013.
