The Bulldogs play perennial finalists Dennington on Saturday followed by Old Collegians and Nirranda to round out Ellerton's first three games in charge.
The playing coach said it will be an early "reality check" for her new-look side but knows it will benefit it later in the season.
"We are aware our combinations might not come straight away but this will show us where we need to keep working and if we need to work on things we can do it early and build from there," she said.
"We may as well get tested by top teams to let you now where exactly you are."

Ellerton said work and study commitments meant the Bulldogs' side had not been all together during pre-season and they had been training as a combined A and A reserve squad.
"We haven't had a lot of sessions with everyone together so it is a more combined A and A res squad so it will be good to be able to step on court together and see how we look together," she said.
"We are still working and refining a few things like in the goal end and defence end. There is not too much expectations quite yet.
"We want to get on court first as we have plenty of time to gel. We want to get on court and enjoy the fact we are playing and hope the rest will fall into place."
Panmure had Mandy Van Rooy (South Warrnambool), Sophie Melican (returning), Lily Lourey (Terang Mortlake), Laurie Symons (Kolora-Noorat), Jess Rohan, Lisa Pender, Abby Sheehan (South Rovers), Bailee Overweter and Maddie Mason are new to the team this season.
