Warrnambool's Gateway Church is holding two services on Sunday as well as its Friday service to cater for those who want to attend.

The church has been at half capacity - about 130 people - for much of the year as coronavirus restrictions mean only half their congregation can attend each week.

Kardinia Church Warrnambool has also been running at half capacity, and while they are holding their Friday service online with members encouraged to gather in homes, the Sunday service will be celebrated with a jumping castle and children's activities.

"Normally we do a Good Friday service but this time we are experimenting and doing something different because we couldn't fit the number of people who would normally come for that service so instead of doing two services we thought we'd do it online," pastor Sandro Schietroma said.

People have to preregister to attend the services.

Other denominations across the city are also running services this year.

Dozens of people took part in the Way of the Cross walk from Cannon Hill to Lake Pertobe on Friday to remember the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross.

Church events and traditional Christian celebrations had to be abandoned last year as the country was placed under strict COVID-19 restrictions in an effort to stop the pandemic spreading throughout Australia.
