Jesse Cosgrove, 25, of Hamilton, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Friday where he made an un-represented, unsuccessful bail application.
He told the court he hoped to be released from custody to be there for the birth of his child.
But magistrate Jelena Popovic said there was a "very real risk" that Mr Cosgrave would continue to offend and remanded him in custody.
Police allege the man stole his mother's car and then refused to stop while fleeing from police about 4am Thursday.
The court heard officers later attempted to corner the man by pulling the police divisional van into a dead-end car park where he was parked.
But Mr Cosgrove allegedly reversed his vehicle by 180 degrees at speed, causing the tyres to screech.
He drove at officers, narrowly missing the police van, and then fled the scene.
It's alleged he also damaged a fence while driving in Rippon Road after being seen in Dempster Drive.
Mr Cosgrove was arrested about noon Thursday hiding in the roof space of an associate's home in Kenna Avenue.
He refused to surrender to police and was subsequently OC sprayed.
Mr Cosgrove was arrested and conveyed to Hamilton police station where he made a no comment interview.
He was charged with theft of the car and a range of high-end driving offences, including reckless exposure of a police officer to risk by reckless driving.
The court heard that at the time of the offending, the man was on bail for family violence related offences and was also undergoing a community corrections order.
Mr Cosgrove will appear in Hamilton Court on March 3.
