Plastic items with the number five recycling symbol on them can now be placed in the yellow recycling bins of Moyne residents.
Prior to this change, these products were only allowed into red landfill bins.
These products included empty containers for ice cream, margarine and yoghurt.
Containers marked with the number five are now added to those with the numbers one and two which can also be put into yellow bins.
Previously, putting number five-marked containers into the yellow bin would contaminate the whole bin which would need to then go to landfill.
Moyne Shire residents are being urged to check recycling ratings on all containers to ensure they are putting them in the right bin, thus reducing landfill waste.
