The survey asked the opinion of readers after Motorist Gavan Nevill slammed the introduction of the pedestrian crossings as one of the "worst decisions" by the city council.
There were 501 respondents to the survey, with 69 per cent of people voting to remove them. More than half of the people who completed it said they did not think foot traffic in the CBD had increased since they were installed. The survey respondents were also asked whether the city needed more pedestrian crossings, with more than 80 per cent saying no. In addition to that 70 per cent of the respondents said they would support the removal of the crossings, even it if meant spending more ratepayer money.
Respondents were asked what they thought would improve the flow of traffic in the CBD and increase foot traffic.
"Traffic lights," wrote one respondent.
"Two lanes and turning lanes on the corners like there use to be," wrote another.
Another respondent said they believed Liebig Street should become a mall. "Make the speed limit 20 km/h or get rid of the cars," wrote another.
"I'm not opposed to more pedestrian crossings but I think having a couple of thoughtfully placed traffic light timed crossings would be better for both pedestrians and overall traffic flow through the area," wrote another respondent.
