Warrnambool police highway patrol unit Acting Sergeant Jason Barker said the man of no fixed address was arrested in Casterton on Saturday morning.
He said police received multiple reports relating to the man's driving on the Princes Highway between Camperdown and Cudgee, east of Warrnambool, for about an hour from 5pm Friday.
He said the driver was arrested, interviewed and charged with six offences, including four counts of reckless conduct endangering life and two counts of failing to stop when requested by police.
"An investigation is ongoing and we are requesting anyone who saw the manner of the man's driving, or who had to take evasive action to avoid a collision, to contact the Warrnambool police station on 5560 1333 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.
"We would welcome anyone with dash camera footage of this gentleman's driving between Camperdown and Cudge from 5pm to about 6pm on Friday."
Acting Sergeant Barker said it was an extreme example of dangerous driving and fortunate no other road user was injured or killed.
"We would also like to thank members of the public who contacted triple zero (000) and alerted police to what was going on. It was clearly extreme dangerous," he said.
A blue Holden Commodore sedan was seen by police being driven fast along the Princes Highway through Camperdown to Cudgee.
The Holden Commodore was overtaking vehicles on double lines and blind bends, forcing vehicles to take evasive action to avoid collisions.
The Holden Commodore then lost control in a section of roadworks along the Princes Highway near Cudgee, spinning out of control and colliding with signage before being driven off.
Police later sighted a second vehicle, a silver Ford Falcon sedan, driving erratically along the Princes Highway in Port Fairy about 9pm.
The vehicle drove onto the wrong side of the road before police attempted to intercept it without success.
A 31-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested about 8.30am Saturday morning in Casterton.
He was interviewed, charged and remanded in custody to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Monday for a bail/remand hearing.
Anyone travelling on the Princes Highway, specifically through roadwork areas, who witnessed either of the vehicles or could provide dash cam footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report via www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
