If you drive around the heritage areas of just about any Australian city - be it regional or metropolitan - you will likely see many California Bungalows.

Inspired by the beautifully functional architecture of Pasadena, the Bungalow became an Aussie favourite in the early 20th century. Not only was the climate in many parts of Australia similar to that of southern California but the style of the homes also matched our aspirations. They were a reflection of the quality of life we sought for ourselves and our families.

So, it's little wonder that more than a hundred years later, Aussie builders and architects are again looking to the United States to develop a new style of architecture, one which more closely reflects our modern lifestyle: The Hamptons style home.

Inspired by the luxury and chique functionality of the exclusive Long Island neighbourhoods of Southampton and East Hampton, this unique style is fast becoming ubiquitous in many new developments and housing estates across the nation.

So what exactly is a "Hamptons style home"?

The Hamptons style homes are defined by their beautiful architecture and the unique decorating styles, which hail from New York's most exclusive community.

Like something out of F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, these homes ooze sophistication, beauty, and timeless elegance, the kind typically found in luxurious seaside manors.

Influences of 1920's grace are perfectly captured through the use of brass and art deco patterns, which co-ordinate harmoniously with crisp whites, cool neutral shades, greys and inky blues, creating a light and airy colour palette, and a tranquil space to call home.

In much the same way as the bungalows of yesteryear matched the humble "Aussie Dream" a century ago, the Hampton's Style is built for the modern world. It is light, airy and endlessly chique. A perfect place to relax and rid yourself of the stresses of the world.

What defines the interiors?

Aesthetics are the key to the beauty and popularity of the Hamptons style.

This typically means low-sheen paint for the walls and a white semi-gloss for the windows and trim.

While you can get creative with your curtains or window coverings, it is best to keep them to a minimum, as natural light is critical to the overall effect.

When it comes to flooring you want to keep it light, be it whitewashed timber, white marble tiles or a carpet with a grainy-weave in natural tones.

Timber panelling is also prevalent in many designs - be it on the ceiling or incorporated throughout the house - as it helps to mimic the weatherboard panelling found in a relaxed beachside home.

In the kitchens, country or shaker style cupboards can be used to create that typical country style found in the traditional manors of the Hamptons.

Add to this a custom rangehood - which combines both modern and traditional elements - along with stone bench tops to really complete the look.

In the bathrooms, stone feature walls and black fittings can really take the look to the next level. So too can a traditional style round mirror.

Other features such as wall paper feature walls in bedrooms, built in bookcases, and even a grand fireplace in the loungeroom or sitting area can also look stunning.

Finishing the job...

Of course, when styling a Hampton's style home, you want to choose furniture which will complement it but also complete the look.

Ideally, it should be based on more of a traditional style with classic country pieces.

Remember though, the point of the Hamptons style is that elegant seaside, relaxing feel, so remember, to opt for comfort over ostentatiousness.

Linen bedheads in neutral tones can set off any bedroom, especially when combined with complementary textiles and cushions.

Other accessories such as lamps, decorative art pieces, and even some beachside paraphernalia can help to complete the look. But again, remember, the point is elegance, so don't go overboard.

You can also get creative with your fittings too, to help add that desired feel of elegance.
