Police received several photos of the illegal fireworks going off from holiday makers.

Earlier: FIREWORKS let off in Port Fairy on Sunday night sparked a blaze on Monday.

Port Fairy police are appealing for anyone with information about illegal fireworks let off along the Koroit-Port Fairy Rail Trail to come forward.

Sergeant David Walkely said the fire occurred about midday on Monday between Regent Street and the Princes Highway, near the bottom end of Roberts Avenue.

"We had a fire on the Koroit-Port Fairy Rail Trail which was started from someone setting off illegal fireworks overnight," he said.

"The residual heat in the packaging of the fireworks ignited dry mulch next to the rail trail and when the winds picked up they fanned the smouldering mulch which then ignited and spread along rail trail and into grassland.

"Obviously the people set off the fireworks and then just let them off."

The Port Fairy Country Fire Authority attended the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Sergeant Walkely said setting off fireworks was an illegal act which would see the offenders face court.

"People setting off illegal fireworks is actually a common occurrence especially around coastal places over the summer and into the festive period," he said.

"This is an example of the danger that comes along with it. It's a timely reminder with New Years coming up and the dangers that go along with setting off fireworks, especially now that it's summer and the grass is dry. It could start a fire, just like in this instance and it could put people's lives at risk."
