The driver of the black Nissan, James Elliott, said he was heading towards Dennington when the accident happened about 10am.
He said the mattress flew off and smashed his windscreen, but he, his partner and their child were all right.
Mr Elliott said the driver of the silver Nissan pulled up about a kilometre up the road.
"I turned around to check on my partner and our child, but by the time I turned back around he had driven off," he said.
"That escalated things a lot more. The fact he stopped, looked back and then drove off without knowing that everyone was OK.
"It could have been just an accident or pure negligence, but to be unsure if someone was hurt and just drive off ... I find that completely baffling."
Mr Elliott said after posting about the incident on social media, the wife of a police officer contacted him.
"She said she was overtaking the silver Nissan and he sped up, she was unable to overtake him and that's when the mattress flew off," he said.
Anyone with information about the accident is requested to contact the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
