Too Close The Sun ran a gallant second behind Inspirational Girl in the group one Railway Stakes at his last start in November and meets the mare worse at the weights in the Kingston Town.
Smith said Inspirational Girl was the horse to beat in the classic over 1800 metres.
"Inspirational Girl is a top-class mare," Smith told The Standard. "She's had the wood on us. She's beaten us before and meets us better in the weights for the Kingston Town.
"We're going to have to put in a big run to win but in saying that Too Close The Sun has been running very well. He won the Warrnambool Cup impressively in May and has improved a lot.
"The race is worth a lot of money. I would say he'll have a spell after Saturday's race even if we win or lose."
The group one-winning trainer also saddles up group one winning galloper Trap For Fools in the Kingston Town.
"Trap For Fools has drawn a wide barrier which makes his task a bit tougher," Smith said. "He may be a rough place hope at odds if he gets his own way in the run."
Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams saddles up Gailo Chop in the Kingston Town. Gailo Chop has drawn barrier four and will be ridden by Brad Rawiller.
