Hamilton police Sergeant Mark Phillips said after an incident on Thursday the man was directed to leave the premises and a safety notice was issued.

The man was taken to a caravan park, where accommodation was provided.

"He was directed to leave the house, but returned, there were further issues and he was arrested," he said.

The man, who is well known to police, was interviewed, charged and remanded in custody overnight Thursday to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court for a remand/bail hearing on Friday.

"The man was causing issues at the house, no one was overly cooperative, they were separated, a notice issued, but he returned and was causing more problems," Sergeant Phillips said.

"He's left the caravan park and returned to the house, breaching the safety notice in the same police shift," he said.

Breaching a safety notice is legally considered on a par with breaking a court-imposed intervention order.

The notices have to be ratified in court at a later date by a magistrate.
