A strong cold front will cross Victoria today.
Damaging northerly winds, averaging 40 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h, are likely to develop along the western and central ranges later this morning.
These stronger winds are also possible into parts of the northern metropolitan area during the late morning and early afternoon.
Then, damaging westerly winds, averaging 40 to 60 km/h with peak gusts to 90 km/h, are possible in western Victoria, and likely near the coast following the cold front, with peak gusts to 100km/h possible along the coastal fringe.
Damaging westerly winds becoming confined to the coastal fringe this evening, and are expected to ease below warning threshold early Wednesday morning.
Locations which may be affected include Warrnambool, Portland, Horsham, Kyneton, Ballarat and Wonthaggi.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Be aware that trees that have been damaged by heat or fire may be unstable and more likely to fall when it is windy or wet.
- Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Stay indoors and away from windows.
- If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
- If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
- Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
- Stay away from fallen power lines always assume they are live.
- Stay informed monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency.
Today across the south-west will be cloudy with a high (80 per cent) chance of showers, becoming less likely this afternoon.
There will be gusty winds during this afternoon and early evening.
Winds will be northerly 15 to 20 km/h turning westerly 35 to 50 km/h in the middle of the day then decreasing to 30 to 40 km/h in the evening.
At 6.30am in Warrnambool it was 18.9 degrees.
Warrnambool is expecting a top of 22 degrees, Hamilton 20, Colac 21, Ararat 21, Casterton 20, Mortlake 22, Heywood 20, Portland 20, Port Fairy 22, Terang 19 and Camperdown 18.
A cold front to the west will reach western Victoria this morning, central districts during the early afternoon before crossing eastern Victoria during the late afternoon and evening.
A high pressure system will develop over the Bight later today before moving over western Victoria during Wednesday and remaining there on Thursday as a weak cold front crosses Tasmania during the evening.
The high is then expected to move over the NSW coast later on Friday.
For the week ahead - Wednesday will be partly cloudy 16, Thursday mostly sunny 13, Friday mostly sunny 21, Saturday there's an 80 per cent chance of rain 24, Sunday scattered showers 16, Monday showers 16 and Tuesday partly cloudy 18.
