Port Campbell police Senior Constable Tony McLachlan said the 32-year-old motorcyclist lost control of the vehicle on the unsealed Moonlight Head road, one kilometre off the Great Ocean Road.

He said the man crashed into a tree and rolled ten metres down an embankment, requiring a rescue operation to retrieve him.

"He has suffered shoulder and rib injuries," Senior Constable McLachlan said.

SES and CFA members completed a steep angle rescue before the man was then taken by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Senior Constable McLachlan praised the efforts of emergency services for completing the rescue.

"They did a fantastic job," he said. "From our point of view it was great work from SES and CFA and all in attendance."

He said police would continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

EARLIER: A RESCUE operation is under way after a crash involving a motorcycle led to a man falling down an embankment.

The incident occurred near the corner of Moonlight Head Road and the Great Ocean Road at Wattle Hill, east of Princetown, on Saturday afternoon.

An air ambulance is currently at the scene.

State Emergency Services south-west duty officer Costas Chrysopoulos said crews were currently working to rescue a male, thought to be in his 30s, who had fallen down a 10-metre embankment.

SES units from Port Campbell and Otway, firefighters from Apollo Bay, Princetown and Warrnambool, and police have been called to the scene.
