A retired school teacher is being mourned after he died at Warrnambool's main beach on Thursday.
Former Terang and Warrnambool college teacher Martin Porzig, in his 60s, from Naringal, was unable to be resuscitated after he was pulled from Lady Bay about 2pm.
Thursday: Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of a swimmer at Warrnambool's main beach on Thursday.
A Victoria Police spokesman said investigators were told a 60-year-old Naringal man was swimming at the main beach about 2pm.
"The man was located unresponsive in the water a short time later," he said.
"Sadly, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful."
The spokesman said investigators would prepare a report for the coroner.
A Warrnambool policeman said it was not yet known if the man suffered a medical episode, physically drowned, or a combination of both.
He said nearby swimmers dragged the man out of the water.
Warrnambool police, paramedics and Fire Rescue Victoria attended the scene.
The beach was busy at the time with people enjoying the 30-plus degree temperature.
It comes just days after a Melbourne man was rescued from waters at Logans Beach.
Lifesaving patrols at coastal clubs will begin from Saturday November 28.
