If you grew up in Warrnambool, you probably have fond memories of feeding bread to the ducks at Lake Pertobe.
But it seems the kind gesture may be doing more harm to our feathered friends than good.
Warrnambool City Council erected signs at Lake Pertobe after a number of community members raised concerns about the practice.
A council spokesman said the signs were installed in March.
"This was in response to community concerns about providing processed food to what are predominantly wild populations of ducks," he said.
The council is considering whether to install similar signs at the botanic gardens.
"The need for similar signs is under consideration at Warrnambool Botanic Gardens," he said.
"A number of the ducks at the botanic gardens are escaped domestic breeds and may lack the foraging capacity of the Lake Pertobe ducks."
