It's a golfer's marathon - 72 holes and play from dawn to dusk.
But its main purpose is to raise funds and awareness for Cancer Council's research, prevention and support services.
"My grandfather has probably not got too long left in him," Rees said of his poppy, Ivan.
"It's sort of the perfect time, while he's just about at the worst he can be, to try and get something like this done.
"I saw it pop up and thought it was the perfect opportunity to try and raise a bit of money for a perfect cause that's pretty close to me.
"Unfortunately it's something in our family as well, so the sooner we can try and get stuff sorted out for it, the better."

Rees explained his grandparents were living in Hamilton but had been Balmoral residents.
The keen golfer will undertake the mammoth challenge with friends Zac Leehane and Dylan Keane at Warrnambool Golf Club on December 14.
They're going to tee off at 5.30am and expect to finish about 7.30pm.
"That's roughly what we think, depends how well we hit them I suppose," Rees said with a laugh.
The baker, who plays up to three or four rounds a week, explained he and Leehane usually played a couple of rounds together.
The trio - called Triple Bogey - have set a goal of raising $3000.
"I think having three team members, if we can get one thousand each, that would be pretty good," Rees said.
"Obviously the more the merrier."
They won't be the only south-west golfers taking on the challenge with numerous teams being formed.
Rees has also recently signed with Dennington for the 2021 Warrnambool and District league football season.
He had intended to play with Russells Creek in 2020 but the season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The midfielder/forward is excited to play with the Dogs next year.
"They're on the way up, that's for sure," he said.
"In the hands of (new coach) Benny Thornton now, he's going to put them in a really good place I think."
He said the Dogs had their first pre-season run last night.
