Police are requesting anyone with security camera footage in the Laverock Street area of Warrnambool to get in touch with investigators.
Detective Senior Constable Joe Fisher, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said an intruder forced his way into a Laverock Road unit about 2am on Sunday morning.
The resident barricaded himself in his bathroom and the offender stole a $50 air compressor.
Police suspect the offender left the area in a vehicle.

Sunday, 11.50am:
A Warrnambool man was left shocked and shaken after an intruder smashed his way into west Warrnambool flat at 2am on Sunday.
Detective Senior Constable Joe Fisher, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said the home invasion happened at a Laverock Road unit in west Warrnambool.
"At 2am Sunday morning a man was banging on the front door, demanding to be let in," he said.
"He's then used something to smash the front window and forced his way inside.
"There may have been a second person in a car outside, but we believe only one person entered the property."
The police investigator said that when the offender forced his way inside the home, the resident ran into bathroom and barricaded himself in that room.
"The suspect attempted to enter the bathroom, but has failed to gain entry," Detective Senior Constable Fisher said.
"He's then left via the front door and stolen an air compressor valued at $50 on the way out.
"The occupant of the home has been no idea who the offender is and said he didn't get a look at the offender as he ran straight to the bathroom.
"There were no demands for cash made but the occupant was invited to come outside a number of times."
Detective Senior Constable Fiser said the offender called out "open the door" and "come outside" a number of times.

"The victim has been left shocked and shaken up. He's distressed.
"He was woken by the noise at the front of the house and the demand to open the front door.
"When he would not do as requested the front window was smashed," he said.
Earlier: A Warrnambool man was forced to take refuge in his bathroom after an offender invaded his home overnight Saturday.
Police are currently on the scene of the aggravated burglary committed overnight at a Laverock Road home in Warrnambool.
A police spokesman said it has been reported an offender broke into the home while the occupant was at home.
The resident was able to lock himself in the bathroom while the offender was inside his home.
He is not believe to have been injured.
Crime scene officers will attend the property this morning and are expected to forensically examine the home.
