The Albany Racing Club will stage a $100,000 race over 3100 metres and the winner is guaranteed a spot in the $300,000 Jericho Cup (4600m) next year at Warrnambool.
The Jericho Cup is the brainchild of philanthropist Bill Gibbins and honours Australia's lighthorsemen and their mounts.
Gibbins told The Standard he's excited with the involvement of the Albany Racing Club.
"There is probably no better place on this planet to hold a qualifier race than Albany," the passionate racing fan said.

"It's part of Australian history that I was totally ignorant of, about tough hardened men who came together from every corner of this country and combined with even tougher hardened Australian horses - the Walers - to form a dynamic victorious fighting force.
"The history of the Anzacs is part of our DNA, and as for the race day it is not just the Jericho Cup, each race honours a person, horse or engagement in that conflict, each one tells a story that is compelling."
Albany Racing Club General Manager Mark Bayliss said the club is honoured to host the Jericho Cup qualifier.
Warrnambool Racing Club CEO Tom O'Connor said the introduction of Albany adds another dimension.
