Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said police were notified of an attempted burglary at Warrnambool College on Tuesday night.
"At 10.10pm, R&M Security have been made aware of multiple hits of the Warrnambool College alarm system in the school's auditorium which is situated on the northern boundary of the school," he said.
"Police arrived on scene with the reporting person and observed a door on the south side of the building to be slightly open.
"Police entered the building and conducted a search but no one was present."
Detective Senior Constable Hughes said another door on the north side of the building was left wide open.
"Upon further inspection, it was noticed that an internal glass door to a gym inside the auditorium had a damaged swipe card lock which is located on the wall beside the door," he said.
He said detectives also discovered a broken glass panel in a garden bed which appeared to have been removed in an attempt to gain entry.
Detective Senior Constable Hughes said nothing was stolen from the premises.
He urged anyone with information to contact Warrnambool police or Crime Stoppers.
