The state on Monday was lashed with heavy rain, flash flooding, gale-force winds, cold temperatures and hazardous surf conditions, but conditions eased overnight.
The Bureau of Meteorology says cool temperatures and cloudy weather will continue on Tuesday, but NSW residents will have a chance to clean up from yesterday's downpour and prepare for more on Wednesday.
A three-day deluge caused a landslide at Mackerel beach in Sydney's north, destroying one house and damaging others on Monday, with residents there being evacuated.
The State Emergency Service has been busiest on the Central Coast, while in Sydney the worst hit areas were Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby in the north, a spokeswoman told AAP.
Massive rainfall totals were recorded on Monday, with Gosford receiving 128mm in 24 hours and Sydney's St Ives 98mm.
While the majority of the 1080 calls for help the SES have received since Friday have been regarding leaking roofs, teams have also conducted 14 rescues of people trapped in cars - 11 of those on the Central Coast.
SES spokeswoman Ilana Pender-Rose says it's essential that motorists heed warnings not to drive through floodwaters.
"Just 15 centimetres of water could start to float a small car. It doesn't require much water at all," she told AAP.
With heavier rain and storms expected to resume on Wednesday, Ms Pender-Rose said NSW residents should use the better weather to make their homes storm ready.
"Use this time to check your roof is in good repair, clean your gutters and downpipes, secure or put away any loose items in your home, yard or balcony that can bounce around and cause damage."
The bureau says the state's central and southern coastline, as well as the northwest, are likely to be spared the brunt of the weather forecast for Wednesday, with storms most likely in the northeast.
The central interior will also get a soaking, with a week's worth of rain expected in Dubbo on Wednesday.
