Gary Rohan was playing in his third decider after two runner-up finishes with his former club Sydney (2014 and 2016).
The speedy forward was restricted to five disposals, one mark and two tackles in the 12.9 (81) to 7.8 (50) defeat.
Rohan, in his second season as a Cat, played 19 matches in 2020, kicking 22 goals at an average of 1.2 a game.
He booted a season-high four goals against St Kilda in round 11 and kicked three on two occasions, including Geelong's preliminary final win against Brisbane.
Geelong, chasing its first flag since 2011, controlled momentum in the first half and led by as much as 21 points.
But the Cats didn't capitalise on their opportunities, leaving the door ajar for the reigning premier. Richmond kicked nine goals to two after half-time to deliver back-to-back premierships to Punt Road and make it three flags in four seasons.
Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin collected his third Norm Smith Medal for best-on-ground in a grand final for his 21-disposal, four-goal effort.
Gary Ablett missed out on his fairytale finish. The retiring great suffered a shoulder injury in the opening minutes of the contest but battled on, finishing with 12 possessions in his 357th and final game.
The two-time Brownlow Medallist was honoured with a guard of honour.
The grand final capped off a unique season for the AFL with Victorian clubs based in Queensland hubs for a large chunk of their campaigns due to the COVID-19 issues in Victoria.
It was the first time the league had a night grand final and the first time it had been played outside of Victoria.
