The club's 2020/21 season kicked off on Friday with the Albert Park Virtual Duathlon.
The run-ride-run event, which will run from October 23 to November 1, is open to individuals and teams.
Participants complete a course in their own time and submit their effort to the club.
It's free entry and participants must register online.
"We had some really good numbers last year, hopefully we keep building," Barnes said on The Main Break podcast this week.
"We opened up memberships and the majority of the memberships people have signed up to, have now all been new members.
"There are names and faces we haven't seen before which is really giving me confidence that we're growing and people are finding our club a good environment."
The club has opted for a virtual event first up given the state government's current coronavirus restrictions.
There are two distances available for the duathlon.
You can listen to Ian Barnes speak on this week's The Main Break podcast here.
The sprint distance is a three-kilometre run, 9km ride and 1.5km run.
The short course encompasses a 1.5km run, 6km ride and 1.5km run.
Barnes hopes the coronavirus restrictions will ease in time for the club's second event, the Killarney Tri, on November 29.
"We're really hopeful for Killarney to an in-person event," he said.
"We've been watching the (government's) roadmap out and we even pushed Killarney back a week to hopefully be in that roadmap of 50 participants (allowed)."
