Dylan Kelly, 26, previously of Allansford, Warrnambool and Hamilton, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court last month to violence offences and breaching a community corrections order.

On Monday he was jailed for 15 months with a non-parole period of 10 months.

Magistrate Mark Stratmann also cancelled a corrections order imposed on Kelly in June last year and re-sentenced him to five months' jail, which he has already served.

That corrections order was supposed to run for 18 months with conditions Kelly undergo drug and alcohol treatment, offending behaviour programs and judicial monitoring.

He received the order in June last year after pleading guilty to criminal damage and violence offences.

Then on May 26 this year Kelly went to a woman's home despite her saying he was not welcome.

He headbutted her, put her in a headlock and choked her.

Two days later he threw a large volcanic rock at the woman, narrowly missing her head but smashing a television.

He also pleaded guilty to disqualified driving on April 20 this year.

Lawyer Belinda Northey said Kelly was involved in a car accident while drink driving in 2013, he suffered an acquired brain injury, became addicted to opioids and then methamphetamine which led to further offending.

The court heard Kelly suffered anti-social and borderline personality disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder-like symptoms and a "dynamic nature of deficits" that developed since the car accident seven years ago.

Ms Northey said he had issues with emotional regulation and control and "when things don't go right he doesn't have the capability to respond in an appropriate matter".

Magistrate Mark Stratmann said he spent hours digesting a raft of reports, including from a psychologist and neuropsychologist.

He said there were "multiple references to impulsivity throughout the reports", which he said did not decrease Kelly's legal responsibility but did "somewhat diminish his moral culpability".

Mr Stratmann said the offending was "of an extremely serious nature" and had a "huge impact on the victim".

"In my view it is grave offending and remarkably similar to the offending that placed him on a corrections order some time ago," he said.

The magistrate said he accepted significant injuries in 2013 impacted Kelly's ability to make rational decisions but said the court would not continuously accept that in the future.

"You are not to re-offend," he told Kelly.

"If this kind of conduct continues, if you don't take advantage of counselling services...frankly you will keep going to jail for longer and longer."
