The top-order bat, 35, said tweaks could reap rewards when the season started on October 31.

"It's funny how if you tinker a couple of small things how other things can change like results and individual performances," Squires said.

"That is definitely my aim, to get the club in the right direction. We're a powerhouse club but over the last 10 years or so we've been a bit down with numbers and success.

"If we can try and get back on the right pathway again I think it would be a successful (season)."

Dennington won the twenty20 competition last season but struggled to convert that form into two-day and one-day wins.

Father-of-three Squires said the Dogs' aim was to "improve five per cent in all aspects".

He said finding combinations which could occupy the crease would help.

"Last year we didn't have a great deal of batters making runs so there's a few opportunities at the start of this year," Squires said.

"Whoever is looking good in the nets in the pre-season will definitely get an opportunity."

Squires started at Dennington at under nine level and has played for the club bar a five-year period when he lived in Geelong and represented East Belmont.

He returned to Dennington 18 months ago.

"I am at the latter end of my career so it will be good to have a couple of serious years before it all winds up," Squires said.

Luke Cody, who plays football for Warrnambool, has crossed to Dennington from West Warrnambool.
