A police spokesman said CCTV captured two males at Martins Point in the Port of Port Fairy about 8.50pm Saturday.
He said the two males boarded the moored vessel 'Killara' at the jetty.
"Moments after boarding the vessel, the two males were captured on CCTV cutting the rope moorings and setting the vessel adrift in the Moyne River," the spokesman said.
"Port Fairy police are seeking public assistance to identify the two males who attempted to criminally damage the vessel."
The spokesman thanked local volunteers who recovered the vessel which had run aground a short distance away on Sunday morning.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Port Fairy police on 5568 1007.
