They have given support to those living alone and been a reliable, excitable and lovable recreation companion.
Wednesday was International Dog Day and Port Fairy couple Cate and John Melville celebrated the occasion with their three-year-old Dalmatian, Ellie.
Ms Melville said Ellie provided the couple with plenty of joy.
"Ellie actually smiles a lot, she has such a fun nature," Ms Melville said.
"We walk her every morning and night."
