Ian Roberts, 38, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Monday to possessing methamphetamine.
The court heard he was intercepted by police walking in Hamilton overnight on Friday and found in possession of 0.5 grams of ice.
He was arrested and conveyed to Warrnambool police station where he spent two nights in the cells.
On Monday he was jailed for those two days and released from custody.
Lawyer Belinda Northey said Roberts travelled to Hamilton on Friday to visit a friend's new baby.
He was later intercepted late at night and the small quantity of drugs was found in his pocket, she said.
Ms Northey said Roberts was wearing an old pair of jeans and he "didn't realise (the drugs) were in them".
"Otherwise he says he would have consumed those drugs at some point," she said, adding that the drugs were "clearly for personal use".
The court heard Roberts was released from jail in May after serving time for breaching a court order, burglary, theft and driving-related offences.
Ms Northey said her client was making good progress on a corrections order and was open and honest about his challenges with a drug addiction.
