For Blue Bonnet and Coleraine-based trainer Robert Wombwell, things finally fell the right way.

The veteran trainer steered the brindle bitch to her first career victory on Monday at Warrnambool, defeating Max Ruby by just over half-a-length to take top honours.

Wombwell said the two-year-old was one of five dogs in his kennel.

"She's been knocking on the door for a while. She had some placings but couldn't quite get a win," he said.

"She came from New South Wales originally, from a good friend of mine called Ray Aslin in Tamworth.

"The dog's going all right. I've trained a few dogs for Ray, and this one he gave me, so that's a little bonus for me."

Blue Bonnet overcame four checks to secure the triumph. Warrnambool, which normally races on Thursday nights, is hosting two extra Monday meetings in August which are geared to lower-class greyhounds.

The next, another twilight meeting expected to start around 2pm, is scheduled for August 24.

Wombwell said the Monday meeting was a boost for trainers based in the south-west as the South Australian border remained closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I race in Mount Gambier a bit, when the dogs aren't up to Victorian standard," he said.

"I like racing over there in the daytime. It's really good."

Wombwell told The Standard his most talented chaser - Coffey Road - was injured but was on the mend.

"He broke down at Ballarat but he's the best dog I have," he said.

"It won't be long before he's back on the track."
