Skipton police Senior Constable Craig Walker Walker received a call from a member of the public and patrolled Wiridgil Road near Camperdown on Wednesday.

He said he was "utterly appalled" at the speed which the P-plater was clocked.

The driver will face a magistrates court on charges of driving at a dangerous speed and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1295.

Last Friday Camperdown police were left shaking their heads in disbelief after clocking a car at 167km/h when the driver was more than twice the alcohol limit.

The speeding Western Australia drink-driver (.124) was nabbed on the Princes Highway on Friday night near Panmure when he allgedly "flew" past a police vehicle travelling in the other direction.

A P-plater was also caught at Pura Pura, north of Darlington, more than twice the alcohol limit for a fully licensed driver.

The two incidents came just days after Koroit police last week intercepted two drink-drivers with high readings within three days.

Sergeant Martin Flannery, commanding officer of the Warrnambool police highway patrol unit, said it was staggering drivers still chose to deliberately disobey the law.

"There are some terrible speeds being detected," he said.

"Can you imagine a collision at those speed?

"It's absolutely astounding. If there was a collision the results would be catastrophic."

Sergeant Flannery said a number of police operations were currently being run in the south-west targeting the five main contributors to road trauma - speed, impaired driving (alcohol and drugs), distraction, fatigue and failing to wear a seat belt.

"We do rely heavily on members of the public to provide us with crucial information about erratic or hoon driving," he said.

"If you see someone driving in a reckless manner, especially if you have dash camera footage, please contact your nearest police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.
