The men's shed currently shares space with the Port Fairy-Belfast Lions Club at the town's showgrounds.
But this space will become the sole domain of the men's shed, with a new shed to be built to house the Lions club.
Once the new Lions club shed is built and fitted out, the men's shed group will take over the space vacated by the Lions club and start renovations.
The new Lions club shed will run east to west along the showgrounds boundary fence.
Port Fairy Men's Shed president Peter Down, who is also a member of the Lions club, said the plan was to improve the whole experience of being at the shed for members.
"The new area we are going to make into more a social space," Mr Down said.
"It will be a place we can sit down and have a chat and a cuppa.
"We'll put a bit of a kitchen set up in the corner and some chairs and tables and make it pretty social.
"We have had this project on the go for a couple of years and have worked closely with the Lions club to get to this stage.
"Agreements are in place so it's not far off ready to go as far as building the new shed goes."
The project received a big boost last week when Moyne Shire Council announced it had allocated $17,682 from its community assistance fund towards it.
This comes on the back of funding from a number of other sources, including $16,000 from the Port Fairy and District Community Bank.
Mr Down said the club was also looking to further improve its workspace area.
He said the safety of members while they worked was always a priority.
"it is a very safe place to work in but we are always looking out for ways we can make improvements," he said.
"The members really enjoy getting together to work on different projects and we are keen to make the shed the best facility it can be."
The shed, which opened in 2009, has over 70 members, while a women's craft group also uses the facility each Thursday.
