Michael, 10, will umpire alongside his dad Andrew for the first time on Saturday.
The St Joseph's Primary School student will run the boundary while long-time officiator Andrew, who is without senior duties in 2020 due to coronavirus-enforced cancellations, will be in the centre for the Camperdown versus Cobden under 18.5 game at Leura Oval.
Andrew said his son had made steady progress since joining Warrnambool and District Football Umpires Association in 2019.
"Michael started last year. He was just going to come up to training with me and then he got the opportunity and he's loved it," he said.
"He was doing younger grades, the Warrnambool and District under 15s and under 13s I think.
"At the end of last season I said 'mate, I'm glad you're just giving it a go, I don't care if you don't want to do it next year'.
"And he goes to me 'why wouldn't I? I love football, I enjoy running and the money's not bad either' so I thought they're pretty good reasons to stick at it."
Andrew, a paramedic by trade who started his umpiring career in 1988, said he was excited to see his son's enjoyment on Saturday.
"I have gone and watched him umpire a few times but to have a bit more of a closer look at him officiating (will be great) and I think he's quite looking forward to running with me as well," he said.
Andrew said Michael was "a good little runner" who also played soccer and hockey.
He said he could envisage his eldest boy progressing to field umpiring.
"If keeps his motivation as far as fitness and footy and the money side of things, I think yes, he'll follow in his old man's footsteps," Andrew said.
"But time will tell. We'll see what he enjoys. I obviously don't pressure him.
"I've got a younger son Aaron, he's eight, and he took up umpiring training this year. He's not officiating any games, he's a bit young."
