Police believe the cause of a house fire at a derelict dwelling on Hamilton's Petschels Lane is suspicious.
Detective Sergeant Mark James, of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit, said there was no electricity connected to the home.
"The finding of cause suspicious is largely based on the fact that there's no power on to the property," he said.
"It's a vacant derelict house in an isolated area. We've had a talk with the owners, it's a deceased estate and it's not insured.
"Investigations are ongoing. We would like to hear from anyone who saw people coming and going from the property," he said.
Earlier: Police are currently guarding the scene of a house fire at Hamilton awaiting investigators to determine the cause of a blaze.
Hamilton police Sergeant Chris Thomson said emergency services, including police and the Hamilton Country Fire Authority members, were alerted soon after 2.30am Wednesday.
"We currently have a police guard on the potential crime scene at the Petschels Lane address," he said.
"Police and the CFA were called at 2.39am. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and members of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit will examine the scene this morning.
"The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire, no one has been living there."
The dwelling was fully engulfed by fire when emergency services personnel arrived.
Damage is expected to be extensive.
Anyone with information is requested to contact the Hamilton police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
