Chris Austin, 27, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Friday to possessing cannabis.

He was arrested about 1.20am Friday after officers intercepted a car in Warrnambool's Raglan Parade and found Austin in possession of 7.8 grams of cannabis.

At the time of the offending, Austin was on a court-imposed corrections order in relation to charges including intentionally causing injury, robbery, obtaining property by deception and committing an offence on bail.

The court heard Austin had nearly 30 pages of criminal history.

Lawyer Morgan Adams said Austin had a mild intellectual disability and was therefore a "poor vehicle for general deterrence".

He urged the magistrate to take into consideration the one day his client had spent in custody and suggested Austin receive a financial penalty.

But magistrate Simon Guthrie said a fine was "not going to happen".

He said he had regard for "the need to ensure services are in place to deal with what is a very significant past, traumatic history" and placed Austin on a 12-month adjourned undertaking to be of good behaviour.

Mr Guthrie urged the man to continue with the corrections order, stating that he was "now at a cross-road".

"There comes a time when enough is enough, " he said.

"You either engage (with corrections) or guess where you will be? Right where you are now and how does that help you? It doesn't."
