The farmer was doing a burn off at Waarre Road near the Port Campbell gas plant when a spot fire started in a pine forest.
The alert was raised at 6.45am Tuesday morning, the Port Campbell Country Fire Authority unit attended and quickly brought the small spot fire under control.
It's understood the fire burnt an area of about five square metres.
A Port Campbell CFA unit spokesman said because the registered burn was being watched, the farmer was able to raise the alert and the CFA responded quickly.
"It's just timely to remind people with registered burn offs to keep their fires under observation," he said.
