Country Fire Authority Media said the blaze began at about 9pm on Saturday after a barbecue fire spread to the Kennedy Street home.
Warrnambool CFA station officer Rod Mills attended the scene alongside 10 trucks from various brigades.
"There was a house fire at Woolsthorpe last night which started on the outside of house," he said. "We're still not 100 per cent what caused the blaze (to go from the barbecue to the house).
"The fire got into house and burnt a couple of the house's rooms. There's probably been about $50,000 worth of damage to the house.
"The local brigade was able to get there very quickly and put water on the building which saved the majority of the house."
Woolsthorpe, Koroit, Warrnambool, Kirkstall and Winslow brigades attended the blaze.
CFA Media said the blaze was under control by 9.48pm.
The fire is not suspicious.
