Warrnambool police Sergeant Blake Amos said a neighbour observed smoke come from the Raglan Parade garage at 1.25am Saturday.
The occupants of the home were asleep at the time, were woken and alerted by the neighbour and safely exited their home.
Emergency services were called, the garage was fully engulfed by fire with roof panels on the home also damaged.
Five Warrnambool fire brigade units attended and brought the blaze under control.
"The cause of the fire is not suspicious and was believed to have started in an old wood heater in the garage," Sergeant Amos said.
"There was significant damage caused to the garage and its contents and some damage to the rear of the premises.
"It's very fortunate the neighbour saw the smoke and raised the alarm," he said.
