BUDGET
A financial roadmap for the next 12 months has been laid out by Moyne Shire Council with the passing of its 2020-21 budget.
The big numbers include a predicted $800,000 operating surplus, $9.2 million for local roads and a capital works budget of $18.1 million.
Smaller budget allocations include:
*The Killarney Recreation Reserve will get a toilet upgrade, with council to contribute $6000.
*Council offices and depot will get a $20,000 spend on furniture, while maintaining a strong online presence will be aided with $139,000 spent on information technology.
*Flag poles were part of the budget discussion with council both approving and rejecting funding.
Council will contribute $8000 to new flag poles at the Koroit War Memorial.
The Port Fairy Surf Life Saving Club asked for $4000 from council to erect flag poles at its clubrooms at East Beach but this request was rejected. The club has instead been advised to apply for funding for this project through council's community assistance fund.
*The cost of meals on wheels for residents across Moyne remains affordable with each meal costing just $9.30, which stays the same as the current 12 months.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
I want to congratulate the Moyne Gazette team on the return of the newspaper today.
Regional papers are at the heart of our communities and are an important means for us to stay connected. The past few months have been difficult for all of us, facing changes in our lifestyles that we have not had to face before in this lifetime.
For those hit hardest, our local business owners, it is not just lifestyle impacts, but their whole livelihoods. This is a time for all of us to look out for each other, which council has been reiterating through our Looking out for Moyne campaign.
I urge everyone to rally to support each other, support local businesses, buy local where you can, and look ahead to more positive times in the future.
The return of the Gazette is a reminder that our communities will get through this, and that we're all in this together.
Moyne Shire Mayor, Cr Daniel Meade.
