Camperdown CFA captain Danny Gordon said units were called to Camperdown's Manifold Street at 10.25am after reports of contractors boring through a supply line.
"Contractors were boring post holes to construct a boundary fence between a property and Manifold Street," he said.
"They've bored through the supply line coming off the main, causing a gas leak."
Camperdown, Cobden and Weerite fire brigades, as well as Camperdown police, attended the scene.
Mr Gordon said there were no road closures in place and nearby residents have been advised to be cautious.
"We were able to quickly crimp the main line and we are now waiting for the gas company to arrive to join her up again," he said.
"The supply line is fairly small. Thank goodness it wasn't the main because we surely can't crimp that.
"Ironically the company digging the holes were subbing for the company building the fence who had marked it all out.
"The contractors did the 'dial before you dig' but that only shows the position of the main, not the position of the supply lines."
