In a year marred by widespread bushfires, an unprecedented virus pandemic and economic distress, the nation could certainly do with some inspiration.

Daw's fall from Melbourne's Bolte Bridge in late 2018 sent shockwaves through the sporting world. He sustained serious pelvic and hip injuries and was quoted saying: "I've been given a second chance at life."

Remarkably, the Sudanese-born utility managed to a stunning comeback at VFL level in 2019.

Daw was in the box seat to launch an AFL return this season. He narrowly missed selection in round one, but could've easily laid claim to a defensive post in round two as Josh Walker was to be sidelined with concussion.

Then coronavirus popped in, forcing footy into a two-and-a-half month hiatus. Daw's miracle return had to wait.

When clubs returned to training, and the 29-year-old tore a pectoral muscle in an innocuous weight session, fear erupted he could miss the remainder of the year.

Scans revealed Daw could avoid surgery and would instead face a three to four week rehabilitation process. His dream of an AFL comeback was once again alive.

North Melbourne is a club which owns its underdog status. Daw wouldn't be the club's first to return in miraculous circumstances.

Jason McCartney managed a stirring return just 237 days after he was severely injured in the 2002 Bali bombings.

If Daw can complete his miracle return - perhaps within the next four weeks - it will be a shining light in an otherwise gloomy year.
