The league's board, at a meeting with club representatives last week, voted to postpone a decision on the fate of its season until June 22.

President John Box said upcoming guidelines from both AFL Victoria and the state government on issues such as crowds and cleaning regulations would shape the league's final call.

He said clubs lacked the manpower and expertise to carry out frequent and high-grade sanitary cleaning.

"It's all still a bit up in the air," he said.

"I think some clubs would pull the pin now but we'll wait and see what happens. Some might have left the meeting the other night a bit disappointed (we didn't come to a decision) but we'll see what the government says.

"If there are still too many restrictions on clubs it's going to be hard to get going this year."

He said while his "gut feeling" was that restrictions could be too difficult for clubs to police, he was still hopeful the league could return in 2020.

AFL Victoria eased training restrictions last week, allowing two groups of 20 to hit the track without physical contact.

Strict hygiene rules and the closure of clubrooms and wet areas, however, remains intact.

"We have a lot of interest in our football and netball juniors as well, for them missing a year wouldn't be good," he said.

The Hampden league, meanwhile, will meet on Wednesday to discuss the season while the Warrnambool and District league will meet on June 24.
