Four firefighting crews attended the house fire at Latrobe Road around 8.30am on Saturday.
South-west Country Fire Authority regional duty officer Byron Kershaw said smoke was billowing from the house and firefighters in breathing apparatus entered and contained the blaze.
"Basically they saved the house," Mr Kershaw said.
He said the fire began in a roof area connected to an enclosed wood heater.
The blaze damaged about 10 square metres of the roof and Warrnambool SES volunteers attended the house later to install a tarp to secure the home.
Mr Kershaw said it was timely that people checked chimneys and flues for winter.
"I always let people know, fair enough you might do your smoke detectors, but you need to ensure your fireplace flues or chimneys are cleaned on an annual basis," he said.
