Portland police Sergeant Daniel Lehmann said the occupants of the semi-detached bungalow started a fire but that led to a blaze in the roof of the bungalow.
"They lit a fire for warmth but then realised a fire had started in the roof of the bungalow that was being renovated," he said.
"The alarm was raised about 3.30am and Country Fire Authority units attended at the property on the Wallacedale-Hamilton Road in Branxholme.
"They extinguished the blaze.
"Fortunately no one was injured although it's understood that the bungalow has been extensively damaged."
Portland crime investigation unit detectives will look into the circumstances surrounding the blaze today but the cause is not initially believed to be suspicious.
