Hamilton police Sergeant Simon Bourke said the woman left her unit about 3pm, leaving the glass sliding door closed over but unlocked and the curtains drawn.
She returned about 5pm to find the curtains open, the door ajar and her Xbox gone.
The Xbox is worth about $200.
Sergeant Bourke said the message to all residents was pretty simple.
"Lock your doors and secure your possessions," he said.
"Thieves will take the opportunity if it's presented to them. Lock your house and car, keep your possessions as safe as possible."
