The trainer, who has stables in Western Australia and Warrnambool, had Grand Annual Steeplechase-winning jockey Shane Jackson on track to oversee Salorsci's triumph in race four.

Salorsi, with hoop Will Price onboard, won the benchmark 170 handicap over 1400 metres in the gelding's third run after a spell.

Salorcsi beat the Peter Chow-trained Kent Street and Matthew Williams-trained Brilliant Concept, making it an all south-west top-three.

Jackson, who won the carnival's main attraction on Tuesday, said they had confidence in Salorcsi.

"He had really good form in WA and he came down here for some beach work and we had to change it up a little bit," he said.

"It's worked a treat and we've been doing a little bit of jumping with him and I thought Will gave him a lovely ride and let him use that big stride he had."

Jackson collected the trophy on Smith's behalf and joked "we'll have a chat about" who kept it later on.
